About The Dartmouth Speed Skating Club

The Dartmouth Speed Skating Club (DSSC) is the oldest speed skating club in Nova Scotia, originating in the 1970s. Over the years we have grown considerably from the original two families. We currently have skaters ranging in ability from beginners to provincial team members.

DSSC has been successful in developing high caliber skaters boasting two Canadian Championship medal winners and one National Training Team member. We had three skaters represent Nova Scotia at the last Canada Games in Whitehorse.
DSSC is divided into two groups:

Group A - Made up of our highly competitive skaters who are training towards making the provincial team and Canada Games team.

As a general guideline, skaters in Group A will have skated a 1:05 or better in the 500m, attend both practices regularly, and demonstrate that they are ready to listen and work hard.
Athletes from other sports are also welcome to this group provided that they have strong skating skills.
Due to our low numbers, there are strong prospects for skaters between the age of 14 and 19 (in 2010) to represent Nova Scotia at the Canada Games in 2011, if certain criteria are met.

Group B - Boys and girls ages 5 and up who are looking to improve their basic skating skills are welcome in this group. Made up of our younger and up-and-coming skaters who are learning the basic speed skating techniques through drills, games and local competitions that are held throughout the maritimes. Although the size of the group will differ from year-to-year, the maximum number on ice will probably be around 16 skaters. We try to emphasize having fun and to ensure that all individuals have an equal opportunity to play or compete during the regular season.

At the beginning of the 2009-10 season any new skaters who are older and more experienced in skating I would encourage to come out for both sessions, so I can better evaluate their ability skaters and ensure they are placed in the most appropriate group. If a skater is not able to stay for both practices, that is fine. For the youngest skaters joining the club I would not encourage them to stay on the ice past the first hour. Returning skaters will be informed as to what group they will be placed prior to starting the season.

We are also offering a 4 week introductory period for $100.

We're going to be at the 2009 Milk Sport Fair, which is being held at Exhibition Park from September 22-24th. Exhibits are open daily (Tuesday to Thursday) from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We're going to have a slideboard (Demo Video Here) for kids to try out, as well as some short-track skates, klap skates, and much more. Hope to see you there!

For those that are eligible, there is a national program that helps disadvantaged kids overcome the barriers preventing or limiting their participation in organized sport. KidSport™ Nova Scotia provides funding of up to $300/year/child for sport registration and/or equipment. Skating Season & Schedule
The 2009-2010 season starts on Thursday - September 17th and ends at the end of March. Here are the practice times (some changes may occur):

Group A On Ice Mondays 5:55 to 6:50pm
Thursdays 5:55 to 6:50pm

Off Ice TBA

Group B On Ice Mondays 5:00 to 5:55pm
Thursdays 5:00 to 5:55pm
