Nova Scotia To Host Test Event for the 2011 Canada Winter Games in January!

2010 Eastern Canadian Short Track Speed Skating Championships

January 23 & 24, 2010 - St. Margaret's Centre, Upper Tantallon, NS

The top skaters and officials from across Eastern Canada will converge at the St. Margaret's Centre for the 2010 Eastern Canadian Short Track Speed Skating Championships. Besides being the first time for Nova Scotia hosting this event, it will also be the first opportunity for skaters to race in the newly renovated arena with its Olympic Size ice surface. St. Margaret's Centre will be the official venue for short track speed skating at the 2011 Canada Winter Games and this event will allow spectators to get a glimpse of the top skaters from across Atlantic Canada.

Short track speed skating is racing on ice on a 111m track in an indoor arena. It is tactical and requires good technique, strength and endurance. Short track features pack-style racing in groups of 4 to 6 skaters. The combination of speed, strategy, passing, and spills always makes for an exciting event. A standard meet will have 4 sets of races at different distances which vary depending on the ages of the skaters. Races are as short as 111m (1 lap) for the youngest skaters and as long as 3000m (27 laps) for the senior skaters. The winner in a short track race is the “position” in which the skaters cross the finish line.
